Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the impact of urbanization on local wildlife. A recent study in Melbourne observed that while some bird species, like the magpie, have adapted well to city life, others, such as the superb fairy-wren, have declined significantly. The main factor appears to be the loss of undergrowth, which provides both nesting sites and protection from predators. Interestingly, the study found that urban parks with native shrubs supported up to 40% more bird species than those with only lawns and exotic plants. However, the researchers also noted that noise pollution affected birds' communication, especially in areas near major roads.
