Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks in cities can reduce local temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. This cooling effect occurs because plants release water vapor through transpiration, which absorbs heat from the air. Additionally, trees provide shade, lowering the surface temperature of pavements and buildings. However, the effectiveness depends on the size and distribution of green areas. Small, scattered gardens have less impact than large connected parks. For example, a single large park of 10 hectares can cool its surroundings up to 300 meters away, while several small gardens only affect a radius of 50 meters each. Therefore, city planners should prioritize creating larger, interconnected green spaces rather than many tiny ones.
