Today in our environmental science lecture, we will discuss the impact of urban green spaces on city temperatures. Recent studies have shown that parks and rooftop gardens can reduce local temperatures by up to 3 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the effectiveness depends on the size and connectivity of these spaces. For example, a single large park has a more significant cooling effect than several small, isolated gardens. Additionally, trees with broad leaves are more efficient at providing shade than those with narrow leaves. City planners should prioritize creating connected networks of green areas to maximize the cooling benefit for residents.
