Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks and community gardens can reduce the urban heat island effect by up to 4 degrees Celsius. Additionally, these areas improve air quality by absorbing pollutants like nitrogen dioxide. Interestingly, the presence of trees near residential buildings has been linked to a 15% reduction in energy consumption for cooling. However, the benefits depend on the design and maintenance of these spaces. For instance, large lawns require significant water, which can offset environmental gains in dry regions. Therefore, city planners should prioritize native plants and efficient irrigation systems.
