Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban heat islands. As cities grow, concrete and asphalt absorb and re-emit heat more than natural landscapes do. This effect can raise city temperatures by several degrees compared to surrounding rural areas. One key solution is increasing green spaces, such as parks and rooftop gardens, which provide shade and release moisture. Another approach is using reflective materials on buildings and roads. However, implementing these measures requires cooperation between local governments and urban planners. Research shows that even small green areas can significantly reduce local temperatures. So, while challenges exist, practical steps can make cities more livable.
