A recent study in Melbourne found that adding trees and parks to city centers can reduce local temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the key factor is not the size of the green area but the density of tree canopy. Interestingly, the researchers also noted that water features, such as fountains, had a negligible effect compared to trees. Furthermore, the cooling benefit was most significant in neighborhoods with older buildings, which tend to retain more heat.
