Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks in cities can reduce local temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. Additionally, these areas improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. However, the benefits depend on the size and connectivity of the green spaces. For example, a single large park has a greater cooling effect than several small scattered gardens. Moreover, trees with broad leaves are more effective than those with needle-like leaves because they provide more shade. So, when designing sustainable cities, planners should prioritize large, connected green areas with diverse tree species.
