Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The modern bicycle, as we know it, was developed in the 19th century. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called the 'draisine', was invented by Karl von Drais in 1817. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground to move. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'velocipede'. This design was improved in the 1870s with the 'penny-farthing', which had a very large front wheel for speed. However, it was dangerous to ride. Finally, in 1885, John Kemp Starley introduced the 'safety bicycle' with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, which is the basis for most bicycles today.
