Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban heat islands. These are areas in cities that are significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas. The main cause is the replacement of natural land cover with asphalt and concrete, which absorb and retain heat. Additionally, tall buildings block wind and trap heat. One effective solution is planting more trees, as they provide shade and release moisture. Another is using reflective materials on rooftops to reduce heat absorption. Interestingly, studies show that parks can be up to 5 degrees cooler than nearby built-up areas. However, implementing these changes requires careful urban planning and community support.
