Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle. Now, many people assume the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, and that's partly true. The first two-wheeled, pedal-less machine appeared in Germany in 1817, invented by Karl Drais. However, it wasn't until the 1860s in France that pedals were added to the front wheel. These early bicycles, called 'boneshakers', were uncomfortable. Later, in the 1880s, the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive and equal-sized wheels was developed in England, which became popular because it was much safer and easier to ride.
