In today's lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urbanization on bird populations. A recent study in Melbourne found that although overall bird diversity decreased in urban areas, certain species like the rainbow lorikeet thrived. Interestingly, the presence of native trees was more important than the size of green spaces. The study also noted that noise pollution affected birds' singing behavior, with urban birds singing at higher pitches to be heard. However, the most surprising finding was that domestic cats, not habitat loss, posed the greatest threat to ground-nesting birds in suburban gardens.
