Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding parks and trees to city centers can reduce local temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the researchers noted that the cooling effect is strongest within 100 meters of the green area. Beyond that distance, the benefit drops significantly. Interestingly, they also discovered that vertical gardens on building walls are less effective than street-level trees for cooling, but they help improve air quality more directly. The study recommends prioritizing small, distributed parks over one large central park, as they provide more equitable access for residents.
