Good morning. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The first bicycle, invented in the early 19th century, had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, but this design was unstable. The 'safety bicycle' introduced in the 1880s featured a chain drive and two equal-sized wheels, making it much safer. Interestingly, the pneumatic tire, invented in 1888, was originally designed for bicycles, not cars, and greatly improved comfort and speed. By the 1890s, cycling had become a popular leisure activity, especially among women, as it offered a new sense of freedom.
