Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the history of the postal service in the UK. The first official postmaster was appointed in 1516, but it wasn't until 1840 that the Penny Post was introduced, which allowed letters to be sent for just one penny, regardless of distance. This was a revolutionary change because previously, the cost was based on how far the letter traveled. Interestingly, the introduction of the Penny Post led to a huge increase in the number of letters sent, from about 76 million in 1839 to over 300 million by 1850. However, the service was initially only available in cities, and rural areas had to wait until later for regular deliveries.
