By the 15th century, coffee was being cultivated in Yemen, and it spread to Persia, Egypt, and Turkey. In the 17th century, coffee reached Europe, where it became very popular. However, early European doctors were suspicious of it, calling it 'the bitter invention of Satan.' It was only after Pope Clement VIII tasted it and approved it that coffee's popularity soared. By the 18th century, coffee was being grown in the Americas, and it became a major cash crop.
