Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing the impact of urban development on local wildlife. A recent study in Melbourne observed that the presence of community gardens significantly increased the number of native bee species in surrounding areas. However, the researchers noted that these gardens alone are not sufficient. They recommend a network of green spaces, including rooftop gardens and tree-lined streets, to support biodiversity. Interestingly, the study found that the size of the garden mattered less than the variety of flowering plants. This suggests that even small, well-planned gardens can attract diverse pollinators, but only if they are connected to other habitats.
