Today's lecture is about the history of the bicycle. We often think of the bicycle as a modern invention, but its earliest form, the draisine, appeared in Germany in 1817. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground to move. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel in France. This design, however, was unstable and difficult to ride. The breakthrough came in 1885 with the 'safety bicycle', which had a chain drive and two equal-sized wheels. This made cycling much safer and more comfortable, leading to a boom in popularity.
