Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks and community gardens can reduce city temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. This cooling effect is due to shade and evapotranspiration from plants. However, the benefits are not evenly distributed. Wealthier neighborhoods often have more trees, while poorer areas tend to have fewer green spaces. This disparity leads to what researchers call 'environmental injustice.' To address this, some cities are now prioritizing tree planting in underserved communities, which can also improve mental health and encourage outdoor activities.
