Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people believe the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but its origins actually go back further. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'celerifere', appeared in France in the 1790s. However, it had no pedals or steering. In 1817, a German inventor, Karl von Drais, added a steering mechanism, creating the 'draisine'. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel in France. Interestingly, the modern chain-driven bicycle with equal-sized wheels was developed in England during the 1880s, which made cycling much safer and more efficient.
