Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss a case study on urban beekeeping. A recent project in Melbourne involved setting up hives on rooftops of office buildings. The initial goal was to boost local pollination, but researchers soon noticed an unexpected benefit: a significant reduction in stress levels among office workers who could observe the bees during breaks. Interestingly, the honey produced contained higher levels of antioxidants than rural honey, likely due to the diverse range of flowering plants in city gardens. However, the study also highlighted challenges, such as higher winter mortality rates for urban colonies compared to rural ones, partly due to limited food sources.
