Good morning, class. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people believe the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but actually, a two-wheeled device called a 'velocipede' appeared in France in the 1790s. However, it had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. It wasn't until 1860s that pedals were attached to the front wheel. Interestingly, the first chain-driven bicycle, which is similar to modern ones, was developed in 1885 by a British engineer named John Kemp Starley. This design allowed for smaller wheels and a safer ride, which greatly increased its popularity.
