Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that parks can reduce local temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. Interestingly, the study also showed that the cooling effect extends about 100 meters beyond the park boundary. However, researchers noted that this benefit is only significant when the park area exceeds 2 hectares. Smaller parks, like pocket parks, have minimal impact on surrounding streets. The study recommends that city planners prioritize creating larger, connected green corridors rather than many small isolated patches.
